Special Presentation #9: Taking or Making Thursday 18th September

At our last meeting we had a mystery presentation night. The mystery turned out to be a discussion about the two major choices we make as photographers - do we take photos or do we make photos.

The presentation explored the importance of taking documentary style photographs, which ultimately provide us with our visual history, while emphasising that documentary photos can still be creative. There was also a brief discussion about truth in photography and how photographs can be manipulated, leaving the question of truth in the hands of photographers and their moral code.

The presentation then went on to discuss the process of making photographs. Starting with an idea and constructing a creative image that visually communicates. This included discussion about creative targets and the use of the vast range of creative tools we now have available. The discussion concluded with some examples of composite photographs.

A pdf version of the PowerPoint presentation, along with accompanying notes,  is now available on  our web site, so you can review presentation or study it if you were unable to attend the presentation.

At our next meeting, on October 2, is an evaluation night. This is an open subject so you can submit photographs that communicate any message. Our moderator for this evaluation will be Murray Brooker.
