Abstract Challenge - Shirley Steel

Off and running with on-line meetings

With some trepidation, we held our first on-line Zoom club meeting to embrace the challenges of Covid-19 times. It was a surprisingly smooth transition and a joy to see a grid of 41 friendly, enthusiastic faces including those of our country members. We were not expecting when we started our 50th anniversary year to have to move with the times quite so dramatically.

Shirley Steel, who had inspired us to do our own abstract photography some weeks earlier, came back for a return visit to comment on our efforts. The range of styles, creative ideas, colours and moods in the images submitted was impressive.

Her impact on our club is best described by a member:

‘And Shirley. Wow. She also had most obviously done a fair amount of pre-work. Her use of Zoom and Lightroom also showed me what could be done with this medium. In my personal view, Shirley is the highlight presenter we have had since I joined. So much enthusiasm and knowledge without an ounce of arrogance and so willing to share.’
