Flower Studies

Flowers are an inspirational part of nature; full of beauty, colour and aroma.

In flower photography we are normally obsessed by sharpness, colour and perfectly rendered detail.

However, in abstract flora photography we concentrate on composition and patterns (or shape) of all or part of the flower.

The image focus can be on the curve of the petals or leaves or how the light reflects off part of the flower.

Often the viewer does not see the flower immediately, but has to deduce the flower from studying the various components of the image.

Fragmented Promises

Over the past decade, Sydney has endured a massive increase in apartment building construction with seemingly chaotic organisation, inadequate supervision and a lust for financial gain.

This has resulted in an abundance of high-rise apartment blocks, with non-complementary design, basically concrete and glass constructions that are set in close proximity to each other and generally out of character with the local neighbourhood.

There have been instances of shoddy workmanship, inadequate quality control and damming reports from high level investigations. These are contrary to promises from politicians, developers and builders that standards will be maintained.

I have tried to portray my impression of this building fiasco by showing the various stages of construction and overlaying multiple exposures of building sites from commencement through to the finished product.

The first major item to appear at a site is the high-level crane, which signifies the final height.

Next is the scaffolding and concrete pumps -- culminating in the final product, full of fragmented promises.
